Thorn, also an outcast, but an outcast with a lengthy history as one of Skandia’s most formidable warriors–before he lost his hand, that is. When the coming-of-age Brotherband training arrives, Hal forms a team of similar outcasts: boys who each have something that sets them apart from mainstream Skandian society. In a society of Viking-esque, burly fighters like the Skandians, a skinny inventor-type naturally doesn’t fit in. But at the same time she’s so insightful. Yes, she can be long-winded and extremely melodramatic at times. I’m reminded all over again how much I love Gabaldon’s writing. I’m about halfway in and loving the book, especially the relationship development between Claire and Jamie. ![]() The show is a little more fun because at least you get amazing costumes. On the other hand, and as much as I personally love France, pre-revolutionary France is not my favorite setting. ![]() Claire and Jamie have one mission and they’re doing their best to carry it out. This one’s more focused, has more character development and a great plot. The other books move slowly and have a ton of different plot points. On the one hand it’s probably Gabaldon’s best STORY in the series, except maybe Book 1. I’ve always felt a little conflicted about this book. This picture is what my book looks like, which I bought in the mid-90s (!). Throughout her retelling, she strives to steer clear of moralism and hero worship by spotlighting human need and pointing to the singular Hero. The tagline of the popular Jesus Storybook Bible (ZonderKidz, 2009) reads: “Every story whispers his name.” In the introduction (“The Story and the Song”), author Sally Lloyd-Jones gently corrects two common misconceptions - that the Bible is mainly a book of rules and a book of heroes. If the Bible is the sacred book we believe it is, then the selection of stories, their emphases and implications, the language and tone, the artwork - everything matters. With four children ages 5-7, I care deeply about children’s Bibles. ![]() |
